The Transformation of Lypiatt House in Cheltenham

Situated in the heart of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire lies Lypiatt House, a grand Victorian residence. Built around 1887 as a luxury villa inspired by the Regency era and surrounded by its own lush gardens, the building spent years operating as a five-star hotel, before recently being transformed into a beautiful private home.

M G Wynn Ltd. was tasked with the full refurbishment of the building and helped to turn the former hotel into a 5 double-bedroom luxury home with a sprawling living area, gym, cinema room, wine cellar and more. The client wanted to breathe life back into the old period features through modern design and bold colours.

With over 30 years of experience in the trade across both commercial and residential projects, Matthew Wynn, Director of M G Wynn Ltd., knew exactly how to approach this luxurious project with care and craftmanship.

Consulting the team at PPG, Matthew and the team used a range of Johnstone’s Trade coatings in crisp whites, deep blues and rich greens to complete the bold transformation. Ceilings were painted with Johnstone’s Trade Perfect Matt for a smooth, flat finish that would eliminate application marks, while Johnstone’s Trade Cleanable Matt was used on the walls for its excellent durability and stain resistance. When it came to the bathrooms, the team chose Johnstone’s Trade Acrylic Durable Matt because not only is it easier to clean than conventional emulsions, but it is also ideal for surfaces susceptible to condensation.

All interior woodwork was freshened up with Johnstone’s Trade Water Based Aqua Guard Undercoat and Satin Finish for its ability to resist grease, stains and scratches. Finally, the exterior was finished in sage green and white shades of Johnstone’s Trade Stormshield Smooth Masonry for striking kerb appeal and a finish that would last long into the future with ultimate weather resistance.

“There were so many aspects to this project – from all the different surfaces and a bold colour scheme, to challenging spaces like the cellar, and the contrast on the interior versus exterior,” said Matthew. “The Johnstone’s Trade technical team were great at recommending the most suitable product for each specific area and the results are impeccable.”

The project was completed in 12 months and emerged as the winner of the Residential category at the 40th Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards. The M G Wynn team’s award-winning work is proof of their successful restoration of this magnificent home, transforming it into a true neighbourhood landmark.

Megan Esmond, PPG Marketing Director UK&I, said: “We loved working with Matthew and the team at M G Wynn on this project. It’s always so satisfying seeing an unused building turned into a magnificent space with Johnstone’s Trade paints. Their win at the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards is testament to their hard work and skill, and we’re delighted to give them that much-deserved recognition.”

The 41st Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards will take place in April 2025 at Aerospace Bristol, and entries for the 42nd edition will open later this year.
