Where did Jenflow Systems all start and where are we heading? Best to start this journey from the beginning. Having been a tradesman my entire life and working for companies, then for myself, I always found I wanted more from life. I always had an eye for details and niches in the market. I started out as a plasterer and was pretty good at what I did but staring at walls all day can become quite mundane. So my eye began to wonder to other aspects of my trade that could fuel my passionate personality.
I came across Venetian plasters about 15 years ago and loved the idea of being able to bring colour to my work. Not only was I amazed by the finishes you could create but also the designs and styles you could implement into a room. I started adding this to my skill set and as a few years passed I started to wonder again. I felt that the walls and ceilings were covered but the floors were neglected. So I searched around looking for a niche. I stumbled across micro cement finishes and thought to myself Bingo, I’m onto a winner here!! As most will know, micro toppings are ideal for floors so I learnt the trade and added this to my arsenal!! I felt content having boxed off all aspects of a surface coatings.
Few years passed and whilst on holiday in America, I noticed a floor that looked out of this world!! It was alien to me!! I couldn’t figure out the type of product that was used to coat this floor and make it look so elegant! It flowed so well within the room it was a truly seamless, flawless finish. So back I went scowling the net trying to see what this product was. My interest was beyond peaked!!!
Eventually I found it, Epoxy resin!! So I ordered some from America off a company called Epoxy Plus and started getting to work installing this in my house. I spent many hours each day perfecting my install methods. I started to install for friends and family who were delighted by the standard of floors I was producing.
Soon enough, I was offered to become a distributer to the UK and thought to myself, me a distributer!! I don’t know the first thing selling a product, installing yes selling no. But then I sat and thought is this an opportunity too good to miss… so I followed up the offer and went into discussion.
The company in question wanted a huge sum of money to invest and that got me thinking why would I pay all this money to basically be a sales rep here in the UK. So I turned the offer down and instead embarked on a journey to create my own resin using the American model as a base from which to work off. I tirelessly sourced and created a resin that was superior to their standards and more fitting for the UK market. A lot of time, money and energy went into this process and still is as we continuously strive to improve.
Once I had the product, I then realised my biggest problem was there is nobody to install it :O so I had to start promoting training. Our first ever was 1 year ago and as nervous as I was and out of my comfort zone, I actually enjoyed myself. Meeting new people, watching them leave and start installing seeing their creations. That’s what it’s all about for me, not so much product sales as nice as they are lol.
Well, 1 year on we have just over 100 trained guys and girls out there!! Some haven’t continued with Jenflow and some have started to perform well. It’s a pleasure to have been part of their journey as much as they have been a part of my journey.
So that begs the question where to and what next, well my wondering eye is back and we are now leading up to our release of a wall resin designed to rival venetian plaster!!! Following that, we will be looking to set up a showroom in London. So, words to the wise, if an idea comes your way grab the bull by the horns!! If you’re passionate enough about something and put all your energy into it you will succeed. Just be prepared to take those lumps knockbacks and setbacks along the way. They will only make your determination more unresolved and perseverance is key. Remember for every door that closes another 2 open. I never imagined I would be doing what I do now and if you had asked me 10 years ago I wouldn’t even have a clue what resin is.
I’ll end by saying I’m grateful to the Decorators Forum UK for giving me the opportunity for me to talk to you about Jenflow. If you want to follow me on Facebook, please click here.
