Q1 Masking Tape Review

Updated Aug 29, 2024 | Posted Sep 4, 2018 | Product Advice

I’ve been using Q1 tapes for a while now, so I thought I’d post an honest Q1 Masking Tape review. I hope you find it useful.

Q1 masking tape was in the automotive industry for years. Decorators got hold of it and started posting their reviews on social media, which prompted Q1 to develop a whole new range of painters tapes for decorators to use. It’s safe to say they’ve gone down well! Q1 Painters’ Tape is everywhere now. I buy mine online, but I’ve noticed them in crown Decorating Centres and some other stockists.

My Q1 Masking Tape Review

The general purpose Q1 Painters Tape is good. Great for carpets and hard flooring. No seepage and easy to remove. This is a fantastic tape for everyday use, and you can leave it down for a couple of weeks without worrying about it marking the surface underneath, or lifting. This is a breath of fresh air, because I’ve been let down by other masking tapes in the past.

The new Q1 precision tape is very good too. It felt a bit too tacky, and I did worry about whether it would pull the paint off woodwork, in this instance, I used it on water-based gloss which had been coated the day before.

I left it down for ten days while I completed the rest of the decorating, then removed it without issue. There was no paint bleed, and it didn’t damage the surface underneath.

The only negative I could find is the normal and the low tack are pretty much the same colour and once taken out of the wrapper there isn’t any way to immediately tell the difference. But that’s the only negative I had. Just be careful when buying Q1, because it all looks the same.

The best thing about Q1 Painters tape is how thin it is. I know this doesn’t sound important, but it means there is less chance of damaging your painted edge. Lines are left clean and sharp. I’m so impressed with it!

FAQs

What is the best masking tape to paint over?

Thin washi tape may be more expensive than traditional creped products, but it’s the best masking tape to paint over. Q1 Masking Tape is ideal.

What is the best masking tape for painting skirting boards?

To protect flooring, carpets, tiles etc. you might use general purpose masking tape, or creped tape. If your aim is to strike a sharp line at the tope of your skirting board, then thin washi masking tape is much better.

Should I remove masking tape when paint is wet or dry?

Removing masking tape while the paint is wet means that you don’t pull on the paint, so you’re less likely to damage it. The downside is you can flick dust and dried paint onto your wet paint and ruin the finish. We find that removing the tape when the paint is just touch dry is the best time. Don’t wait for the paint to cure.

How do you keep paint from seeping under masking tape?

Using a good-quality precision tape will help. If you’re still struggling to stop paint from seeping, then you can apply a very thin bead of caulk on the edges of your masking tape and then smooth off. This will seal the edge and stop paint bleed.
