Why do People Opt for Low Sheen Paints for Walls and Ceilings?
Low-sheen emulsion paints for walls and ceilings are very desirable. That chalky flat (low-sheen) finish is part of what gives paint its depth. Another quality of low-sheen emulsion paints is that they show no defects like picture framing or flashing, and they don’t ‘shadow’, so imperfections in the plaster aren’t highlighted.
There are a lot of specialist ceiling paints on the market now, all low sheen for the reasons highlighted above.
Low-sheen paints suit any room, but they’re particularly good in light-critical or open-plan rooms, simply because these are the areas where you’d normally see the imperfections if you use normal emulsion.
There are a lot of low-sheen paints on the market. However, the issue with most of them is that manufacturers usually need to compromise on durability to achieve the desired sheen level.
My Juno J33 OPAK Review
Juno J33 OPAK is different from most of the other low-sheen emulsion paints on the market. It gives you the desired finish, but it also gives you the durability needed in high-traffic areas such as hallways and even sheltered exterior walls.
You need to dilute Juno J33 OPAK quite a lot before you can use it. I quite like this, to be honest. You buy a 4L tub and you end up with 5L of paint, which is win-win. Once diluted, you’ll find Juno J33 OPAK very easy to apply with great flow and low spatter.
The opacity is fantastic, even in white (two coats is easily enough to achieve a solid colour change). It’s available in a wide range of colours, it is anti-mould, and even fire retardant.
There’s a lot going for Juno J33 OPAK; it’s a great paint. With regards to price, you’re looking at just north of £40 for 4L in white, which is expensive compared to specialist ceiling paints (although it does compete with them on suitability for use on ceilings).
A tinted colour will cost you closer to £50 for 4L, which isn’t actually too bad if you compare it to some of the other high-end durable matt emulsion paints on the market.
Conclusion
I normally try to balance my reviews and point out all the negatives about a product. However, in this case, I’m struggling to think of any. We’re talking about a durable, low-sheen emulsion that’s easy to apply, leaves a great finish, has anti-mould and fire-retardant qualities, and isn’t ridiculously priced. Well, it’s expensive compared to standard matt emulsion, but that’s not what J33 OPAK is.
This is the first product in a long time that I’m giving the full five stars.
