How to Achieve a Soft Sheen Finish on Wooden Floors

As a professional decorator there is no requirement to be a skilled woodworker or woodcare whizz to be able to give clients’ wooden floors a soft sheen finish. Liberon, the woodcare expert, has this covered with a helpful explanation of how to complete this task using floor sealer and wax.

This simple process will give floors long lasting protection against wear and tear whilst at the same time making them look beautiful and enhancing the natural colour of the wood. Decorators can trust Liberon products to ensure the best possible results for their projects.

The first task is to prepare the floor correctly. Sand the floor if required, and remove all pre-existing finishes. Then ensure the surface is clean, dry and dust-free. The next job is to apply Liberon Floor Sealer. To do this shake the tin well and pour the sealer into the black cap provided with the tin. Then apply a thin coat of the Floor Sealer with a brush, roller or cloth in the direction of the grain.

Allow the oil to penetrate for 5-10 minutes then remove the excess with a dry lint-free cloth. A minimum of 3 coats is recommended, allowing 5 hours between coats. Additional coats may be required on porous surfaces or to achieve a higher finish.

It is best to apply the sealer plank by plank because approximately 10 minutes after application the excess sealer that has not soaked into the wood must be wiped away with a clean cotton cloth. This is a vital step because if it is not done the sealer will not dry properly and the surface may become sticky. This oil-based sealer will slightly darken the natural colour of the wood. Allow 24 hours for the last coat of Floor Sealer to harden before moving to the next step.

Applying a coat of Liberon Floor Wax beautifies, feeds and protects new and reclaimed wooden and cork floors. The wax gives floors a traditional soft natural sheen, whilst protecting them against daily wear and tear. Liberon Floor Wax should only be used in rooms not exposed to humidity, meaning it is unsuitable for kitchens or bathrooms. In these areas you should use LiberonFloor Oil, which is specially formulated for these conditions.

Shake the tin of Liberon Floor Wax thoroughly, then apply it in thin coats in the direction of the grain using a brush or cloth, rubbing briskly to ensure the wax penetrates into the heart of the wood. Allow at least 30 minutes to dry and then buff with a cotton cloth or specialised floor polishing machine. Apply further coats until the desired level of sheen is achieved.
