Royal Porthcawl Golf Club’s historic clubhouse has been given a fresh new look and is ready to welcome members and guests, and provide an unforgettable experience at major tournaments. The refurbishment was completed by Pro Crown Painting Contracts partner QDL Contractors – based in Pentrebach, South Wales – using Crown Trade products.

The single-storey, wooden-framed building, perched on the Welsh coastline overlooking the Bristol Channel, has been a feature of the club since the late 19th century. Granted its “Royal” title by King Edward VII in 1909, it has hosted many prestigious tournaments and is a focal point for members and guests. Its coastal location means constant exposure to salt spray, wind and rain, making regular maintenance essential.

To protect the clubhouse from the elements while retaining its character, the fibreglass roof was coated in Crown Trade Fast Dry Cladding, the timber cladding treated with Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Finish, and rendered sections finished in Sandtex Extreme Exposure Masonry Paint. Thoughtful product specification means the refurbishment will stand up to the challenges of the coastal climate, with Sandtex offering up to 20 years of protection, resistance to dirt and pollution, and the flexibility to guard against minor surface cracks.

The colour palette has retained the building’s traditional look, with panelling in Fawn, skirting in a custom dusty/camo green, and window frames, doors and pipework in a bespoke forest green.

Lewis Williams, Commercial Contracts Manager at QDL Contractors said: “The coastal environment presents unique challenges, so it was vital to choose products that could offer real, long-term protection. Working on a building with such history was a privilege, and we’re proud to have played a part in its preservation.”

John Edwards, Secretary at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, added: “The clubhouse is an important symbol of our club’s history and identity. This refurbishment has not only protected the building but also restored its welcoming appearance ahead of one of our most prestigious events.”

The work was completed in time for the recent AIG’s Women’s Open, a highlight in the sporting calendar that brought together top female golfers from across the country. Held from 31 July to 3 August, the tournament drew spectators, media attention, and community engagement, making it essential that all preparations were in place to showcase the venue at its best.
