Crown Paints has donated paint to support the refurbishment of public areas at Hull Charterhouse Almshouse, helping to revitalise the historic Grade I listed Georgian property and improve living spaces for its residents.

The donation enabled students from Hull Technical College to carry out extensive redecoration work across the building’s communal areas. Working one day a week during term time since September 2025, the students gained rare, handson experience of working within a 300yearold, listed building – a unique opportunity early in their careers.

The project has transformed key shared spaces within the Charterhouse, creating interiors that are lighter, brighter and more welcoming for those who live there. The standard of workmanship was also recognised during a visit from a Fire Officer towards the end of the project, who praised the quality of the work – providing an added boost to the students’ professional experience and work history.

Hull Charterhouse Almshouse plays an important role in the city’s heritage, offering supported accommodation within one of Hull’s most significant historic buildings. As a property spanning three floors and over three centuries of history, ongoing maintenance is essential but costly.

Commenting on the project, Ellis Mudd, Production and Engineering Director UK & Ireland at Crown Paints and responsible for the company’s Hull manufacturing facility, said: “Hull is a city with an incredible sense of history and pride, and as a business that has been part of this community for over 200 years, it’s important to us that we give something back.

“Supporting the restoration of the Charterhouse felt particularly meaningful. Located within a mile of the factory, not only is it a remarkable historic building dating back to 1384, but it’s also a place where people live and call home. Seeing local students develop valuable skills while helping to preserve such an important part of Hull’s heritage makes this project something we’re genuinely proud to be part of.”

Mrs Sue Whittaker M.B.E., Chair of Trustees at Hull Charterhouse Almshouse, said: “It gave the whole community at Hull Charterhouse great pleasure to welcome Russell Kitchen and other members of the Crown Paints management team to see the completed work. The donation of paint has enabled us to complete a project that has been outstanding for many years.

“This very timely and generous donation has moved our repair schedule on quite substantially, for which we will be forever grateful.”

The paint donation forms part of Crown Paints’ Project Possible initiative, which focuses on sustainability, education and supporting local communities. With longstanding manufacturing roots in Hull, Crown Paints is committed to making a positive difference in the places where its people live and work.

By supporting this project, Crown Paints has helped protect and enhance an important piece of Hull’s architectural heritage, while also enabling young people to develop valuable skills and experience in a realworld, conservation setting.
