I’m sure many other professional decorators like myself (and probably like many other tradespeople in other trades too) become “tool geeks” over the years. We seem to collect tools that “will come in handy one day”, even if we don’t actually get to use them that often.
The Olfa XSR-300 Heavy Duty Scraper is one of those tools for me. It’s not something I’d use every day, but now that I’ve got one I look back over my career as a decorator and think “I wish I’d had it on that project”!
Anyway, now I have one in my tool bag, I thought I’d write a review, giving you my honest opinions on it having used.

Olfa XSR-300 Heavy Duty Decorator’s Scraper – First Impressions
This is a really robust, well-built tool designed for professional use. It’s built to last, but it also has some flexibility built in; the blades are removable and come in different sizes/shapes/thicknesses, so you can tailor it to the job you’re working on. So with the right blade fitted, you could use it for stripping wallpaper one day, and scraping adhesive off the back of a length of skirting the next, for example, or even removing tiles.
Olfa are right to call this a “heavy duty scraper”; it’s really solidly built and is ideal for scraping off hard to remove paint, wallpaper or adhesive. I’d have no hesitation in using it for those jobs.
On the other hand, I stripped a room of wallpaper the other week, and didn’t even get the XSR-300 out the van, because the paper came away so easily. For tough jobs, it’s perfect, for easy jobs it’s a bit over-spec’d. It’s about using the right tool at the right time – and on the right job, this will make life easier and so save you time (and therefore probably pay for itself the first time you use it).
If you were using it for really tough, stubborn jobs (like removing tiles, for example – with the right blade fitted of course!) you can hit the end with a hammer if you need to – the fibreglass core is designed to stand up to this sort of treatment. It’s not just me saying that – Olfa say it has a “hammerable end”!
A couple of other handy little design features that are there to make life easier or safer for us decorators:
- The blades are really easy to change. Simply turn the “wheel” anti-clockwise, and then hold down the “push” button as you slide out the blade. To fit a new one, simply reverse the process
- It comes with a clip-on blade cover, so no risk of accidentally catching yourself with it while you’re looking for something else in your tool bag
Olfa XSR-300 Heavy Duty Decorators Scraper – On-the-job Performance
This is a great tool for the jobs when you need it. Although it’s heavier than what I’m used to using, the anti-slip grip is nice to hold; I have mild arthritis in my hands, and it was no trouble for me to be working with this most of the day. The fact that it’s bright yellow means it’s not hard to find if you put it down and have a senior moment!
In terms of performance, it rips through wallpaper! I haven’t had a chance to try it on tiles yet, but I was recently working for a customer who had spent a weekend trying to strip the wallpaper in his spare bedroom (including using a steamer, as you can see from the blown plaster!), before giving up and calling in the professionals!
There were multiple layers of paper, which had been painted over several times, but the Olfa XSR-300 scraper tore through it, leaving only the backing paper which soaked off easily enough. And the flexible blade meant that even when I was putting a bit of elbow grease into the work, the walls didn’t get “gouged” once, so less filling and sanding for me to do later.
It’s not “floppy flexible” – it’s pretty sturdy, but has just enough “give” in it to be perfect for stripping paint or paper. When the job was finished, I just gave the blade a wipe with a damp cloth, put the blade guard back on, and put it back in my tool bag. Job done!
