tesa®, recognised throughout the painting and decorating sector for the quality of its Precision® range of masking tapes, has sponsored a prestigious industry award. The South West final of Johnstone’s Trade Young Painter of the Year was held recently at Bournemouth & Poole College, where Matthew Hall from Isle of Wight College was declared the regional winner and Rebekah Holden of City College Plymouth was named runner up.
Johnstone’s Trade Young Painter of the Year has been running for 15 years and aims to find and inspire the next generation of painters and decorators. All competition entrants must currently be studying either an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in Painting and Decorating, a Diploma in Construction Level 2, or in Scotland entrants must be studying towards an SVQ Level 3.
Johnstone’s Trade is a brand of PPG, a leading paint and coatings company. In the UK Johnstone’s have a network of over 200 Decorating Centres. tesa has a strong relationship with PPG across Europe and is consolidating that relationship with Johnstone’s in the UK.
In addition to the South West finals, tesa is also sponsoring 2 more regional prize funds for finals held in Liverpool and Leicester. The Winners from each final are awarded a prize bundle of leading supplier tools, including tesa tapes, as well as £200 cash for the champion and £100 for the runner-up. For the first time this year, a competitor from each region will be selected to join the Johnstone’s Trade’s Ambassador Scheme, an initiative designed to help young people build a career in the industry.
Greg Perkins, Key Account Manager, Craftsmen Trade for tesa UK, says, “We would like to congratulate all of the South West entrants, especially Matthew and Rebekah for finishing first and second respectively. tesa welcomed the opportunity to partner with Johnstone’s for this fantastic competition as we saw a lot of parallels with our own college training programme, which teaches students to identify and utilise the right masking tape for specific applications. We hope to aid and inspire the success of young painting and decorating talent for many years to come. “
