ProDec UltraFlex Decorators Trousers Review 

Some professional decorators like to “look the part” when they turn up to work, in either a bib and brace, or white decorators trousers and a company-branded polo shirt.  Others don’t.  Personally, I’m in the former group – I think “looking the part” is more professional, but each to their own.  

But even when you have crips white trousers, it’s only a matter of time before they’re looking a little worse for wear; paint, wood stain and caulk somehow end up all over them, the knee areas get grubby from kneeling down on dirty floors, and at some point they start to come apart (usually at the seams).  Mine seem to fail around the crotch area – the seams split (often if I’m working low down, painting skirting for example), and no amount of repair work is able to fix them once they’ve gone. 

So when ProDec launched their new UltraFlex Decorators Trousers – accompanied by a promotional film of a gymnast wearing them while doing his thing on a pommel horse – it got my attention.  Could these finally be the work trousers that are built to last (and equally importantly, to save me the embarrassment of revealing my underwear to unsuspecting elderly customers)?

How They Performed On Site  

First impressions: they look smart and professional.  They’re slightly more of a creamy white than the pure white of my normal brand, but that’s not an issue – I can’t imagine a scenario where I would be wearing both pairs at the same time, so apart from in my wardrobe the comparison is unlikely to be made.  They feel really tough; I haven’t physically tried to rip them apart, but they give the impression that it would be a tough job.    

In use, they feel flexible.  Obviously they’re too new for the seams to have started coming apart yet (only time will tell when/if that eventually happens), but I haven’t once had that feeling of “I’d better be careful how I kneel down here in case something rips”.     

I’m guessing the flexibility comes from the nylon/elastane fabric.  The downside of this fabric is that they did feel a bit hot and sweaty compared to my usual cotton ones, but then I have been wearing them on fairly hot days so far. 

  Final Thoughts

To be honest, the only downside I found when wearing these trousers was that they felt a bit hot and sweaty on warm days, but the simple answer to that is “Buy a pair of matching shorts”. They’re tough, they stretch in all the right places, they look professional and they have more pockets than an old bloke knows what to do with. 

It’s going to be months, years maybe before I can really report back on how durable they are, because it’s only when they finally rip or a seam goes, that I’ll be able to compare them to my usual ones. But they feel tough, they feel like they’ve been designed for professionals working on site, so at this stage I’m happy to take ProDec at their word, and give them a big “thumbs up”.
