Can a professional painter and decorator get a CSCS card without having a formal decorating qualification? We asked members of Decorators Forum UK what they think.

You have to do health and safety day course then a CSCS test.. about £250 all in.

Obtaining a CSCS card with no formal qualifications is easy. The whole thing is just a money-making scheme to be honest. All you need to do is book in for a test. I did it before starting my own decorating business. Once you’ve got your card you can step on site.

I don’t know why you’d want to though. The life of a site basher isn’t a pretty one.

You don’t need any qualifications to get a CSCS card. All you need is to complete a short test. So easy that even a brickie can do it. You’ll only get a general laborers card though. Better to get qualifications thorough on-site assessment then get a proper CSCS card.

I’ve was in the same boat 5 weeks ago. I had to pay £1000 to a company called sibbald training. That £1000 gets you a temporary card till they can get out to site to asses and check your work. Once they are happy, they get your portfolio sorted and send it away. Then you get your NVQ level 2 in painting and decorating and send it to cscs to get your blue skilled card.

I’m 31 and was an apprentice at 16 years old. About 5 weeks before I was meant to do my skills test I fell out with my boss and told him to ram his job. I swore I’d never go back to painting then 3 months later went back and been working as a tradesman ever since.

Check out Northwest Skills Academy. They might be able to help or your local college. NVQ level 2 was government funded. Check it out 😉

Yes, you have to do a 4 hour course though. I know it doesn’t sound painful, but it is!! The CSCS scheme is such a waste of everyone’s time.

I had a gold card and when I renewed it came back blue

Get a yellow site visitors’ card. That’s what I’m doing. The chippy told me he has one as he has City and guilds not NVQ. It’s all part of this huge money-making scheme.

NVQ 2 for blue. Green card otherwise. Level 3 gold card

Well did my 3 years in college and 2-year apprenticeship 10 year ago, applied for mine last month and got told all my qualifications are not recognized!!

Soon you won’t get on site with a laborer’s card if you are a trade. So, you must get your qualifications to get your card

Time served or college city guilds NVQ bares no relevance. An experienced brush hand still can get one

I’ve done the test twice, Gold card, but not renewed it,

Absolutely rubbish!! A money-making scam if you ask me!

Health and safety = common sense

All trades require cscs card nowadays on new build or site work. Domestic and commercial not needed. I know lots of trades don’t bother with it….money making machine, two tests now!!

A cscs card doesn’t make you a tradesman. It makes u aware of health safety on site and hazardous materials like cosh. Anyone can get one, just go and do a test

I’ve entered at least 5 sites in last 12 months and worked without the need for cscs card. I asked if I needed it, they said you don’t need a cscs card to enter or work on any site. It’s not a legal requirement of health and safety at work law. It’s only if the contractor wants to follow a cscs safety scheme then you will be required to have one for the site.

Why not just get your NVQ in decorating? It doesn’t matter if you went to collage or not, as long as you’ve been in the trade for long enough and you can do the job. The process is called “on site assessment” and it’s dead easy. Someone comes out and inspects your work looks over your paperwork and gives you an oral exam. It takes about 3 visits.
