I don’t want a male vs female decorating industry. professionals decorators should all support each other. We all want the same thing, an industry where quality work receives the pay it deserves. Before you judge a female decorator, please consider a few things. Some women can brush it off or take it on the chin, but it can cut deep too.

Many women out there have worked far harder than you will ever understand to be taken seriously. Many will be producing work to a way higher standard but paid less, just because they are female. Many women will get up, sort the family and still be at work by 730, finish work go home after most have finished. All because they want to be taken seriously and then see to kids, husband, housework etc.

Women work because we have to. We have to pay bills and be a role model to our children. Many women will literally break themselves trying to be everything to everyone. We chose the industry just like you did. We just want to work, do a good job and get paid. It doesn’t need to be male vs female. Just maybe think before you comment.

We are starting to see more women in the decorating industry now, so maybe times are changing. Maybe in the next ten years, there will be no sexism in the trade at all, and it will not be a “man’s world”. Until then, I’ll just carry on doing what I’m doing. Working hard, doing the best job I can and making a good life for my family. One day, I may even get the work / home life balance right.

It shouldn’t even need to be a point of debate Diane. Women are better at some aspects of decorating and men are better at others (yes I am generalising a little) but all that means is a man / woman team is a much stronger team than a bunch of blokes working together. Just my opinion of course.
