As a Professional Decorator, MacPherson is a trade brand that I’ve learned to depend on, and their Acrylic Durable Matt is particularly good. It’s manufactured by Crown and is often sold side-by-side with other Crown paint products. However, it doesn’t seem to get the respect it deserves, so I thought I’d change that and write a quick MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt review based on my own experience.
What is MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt?
It’s a water-based acrylic emulsion used to coat interior walls, ceilings and sometimes woodwork. As it is a durable emulsion, it’s perfect in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and high-traffic areas. It’s also good in rooms with pets or small children.
You can buy MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt in Brilliant white, or just about any colour from Crown Trade’s vast range. It’s touch dry in roughly 2 hours, but you should wait at least 4 hours before applying additional coats. You can apply MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt via paint brush, roller, or airless sprayer.
Difficult or powdery surfaces should be primed with an appropriate product before you apply MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt. However, all you need to do with bare plaster is dilute your first coat of MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt by 40% to aid adhesion.
My MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt Review
I’m a little bit of a product geek, so I use a wide range of brands. Crown Trade Clean Extreme is the most popular durable matt emulsion amongst the Decorators I’ve asked on our social media channels (and for good reason too, it’s brilliant). MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt offers a slightly cheaper alternative.
It’s fair to say that I’m a fan though. It’s fantastic to apply with brilliant flow, and the opacity in colours is also good. The opacity in white isn’t great, but this is the same with nearly all durable matt emulsion paints.
The best thing about MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt is the overall finish. You expect a value brand of durable matt to leave a cheap plastic-like finish, but this one doesn’t. It doesn’t show defects such as flashing or picture framing either.
You could spend big bucks on one of the low-sheen designer brands and be left with a slightly better finish. Or you could go with Crown clean Extreme, which isn’t low sheen, but is rich and looks gorgeous. However, if budget is a consideration, but you still want a quality product, then I can highly recommend MacPherson Durable Acrylic Matt. It’s genuinely one of my favourites.
I use it regularly when working in people’s homes, simply because I know it’s easy to use and will look great once applied.

The Leyland durable Matt is pretty similar price point / quality and dries to a very flat finish another underrated product, especially in colours.
Very keenly priced at PPG.
