LickPro Interior Wood & Metal Paint has been available for a couple of years now, in both satin and gloss finishes, but only in Pure Brilliant White. That’s fine – in my role as a professional decorator the vast majority of the woodwork I paint is white or PBW.
The thing with us decorators is, we tend to find something we really like and then stick with it, until something else comes along that piques our professional curiosity. I’m no different to anyone else in that respect; I have my favourite products for woodwork, but when I read that LickPro were making all their colours available in their satin finish, I thought “That’ll be handy for media walls and colour drenching projects, maybe I should give it a try”. So I’ve been trying out the satin in both Pure Brilliant White and a colour, and below you’ll find my honest review of the product.

LickPro Interior Wood & Metal Satin In Use
First impressions when pouring it from the tin is that this satin has a nice consistency – possibly a little thick, but not so much that I expected it to be an issue.
The paint goes on nicely, especially if applied over LickPro’s primer-undercoat (which of course is what they recommend). The primer dries to a lovely smooth matt finish, as you can see on the photo (right). I really like the primer-undercoat, it provides a great base and helps with opacity with white top coats. The only downside is that if you use it under darker colour, you may need an extra top coat to cover it solidly.
Back to the satin, it feels like it has a good “body” to it. The flow is really good under normal conditions, meaning it’s easy to use and relatively easy to achieve a great finish. You do need to work fast as it dries quickly, so if you’re finding this a problem (e.g. on a hot day), you can add a drop of water to it.
The finish is really nice; it has a lovely sheen to it when the light catches it, without being “in your face” shiny, pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a modern satin paint. See photos of table and window sill for indication of sheen level.
Excuse the mess! I painted this table, the toy box (far left) and the window sills for a childminder. The job had to be rushed at a weekend when there were no children in the room, and she sent me the photos when she was back at work on the Monday morning!

Final Thoughts
This is a really crowded marketplace – almost every manufacturer has a water-based satin (and/or gloss) in their line-up, and most pro decorators tend to have a favourite that they stick to. In LickPro’s favour, this is a decent quality product, nice to use and it gives a great satin finish. Add to that the fact that it is now available in Lick’s ultra-popular range of colours, and they could be onto a winner here. I’m expecting to have customers asking me to use this product before too long, and having now tried LickPro Interior Wood & Metal Paint and got used to using it, I’d be more than happy to do so.
