JOHNSTONE’S PAINT Brand by PPG Announces Snooker Waistcoat Design Competition Winner
BIRSTALL, UK, Dec. 17, 2024 – PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced that its JOHNSTONE’S PAINT™ brand by PPG has collaborated with the World Snooker Tour (WST) and STEM Learning through their sponsorship of the Johnstone’s Paint Masters, offering young people, between the ages of 11 and 14, the opportunity to design a waistcoat that will be worn by World Champion Kyren Wilson during the Johnstone’s Paint Masters at Alexandra Palace in January.
Judging took place in November, during the snooker UK Championship in York, UK with judges being Kyren Wilson, 2024 World Champion and no.2 in the Johnstone’s Paint world rankings, Megan Esmond, PPG marketing director, UK & Ireland, Architectural Coatings, Jason Ferguson, WPBSA chairman, Neil McCann, founder & CEO, McCann Bespoke London and Louise Herbet, secondary science lead, STEM Learning.
The judges carefully deliberated over the top 20 chosen designs, using criteria including visual appeal, connection to the science curriculum, production viability, and incorporation of Johnstone’s 2025 Colour of the Year, Acai Berry.
“The creativity and thoughtfulness behind the designs were exceptional, and it was truly inspiring to see young minds exploring science through design,” said Megan Esmond, PPG marketing director, UK & Ireland, Architectural Coatings. “This collaboration with STEM Learning and the World Snooker Tour highlights the importance of fostering creativity and STEM skills in young people, with Johnstone’s Paint proudly at the forefront of this initiative. We can’t wait to see Kyren wearing the winning waistcoat in January at the Johnstone’s Paint Masters.”
WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson added: “We are very proud to team up with Johnstone’s Paint and STEM Learning for this fantastic initiative. The ambition to inspire young people is something we share with Johnstone’s Paint and we were thrilled to see the quality of the waistcoat designs.”
Serena, from Sir William Perkins School in Chertsey, Surrey, won the competition with a striking visual interpretation of the chemical formula of Acai Berry, complete with benzene rings representing snooker ball colours and snooker cues represented as molecular bonds. This innovative approach seamlessly combined science and design, showcasing the creativity this competition aimed to inspire.
The waistcoat will be worn by Kyren Wilson throughout his time in the competition. Kyren faces Zhang Anda in the first round on Wednesday 15th January, at 1pm, screened live on the BBC, Eurosport and many other global broadcasters.
