Is This Man a Professional Decorator?

By Phill Southam

This is my business partner Paul. I posted a picture of him on the Decorators Forum and he was accused of not being a professional decorator. I’d just like to clear a few things up.

He doesn’t wear whites, but customers aren’t fussed. Our reputations and personalities speak for themselves, hence why we haven’t advertised in over 8 years and are booked up for months.

He does drive a van, but I drive a car (the van or car doesn’t do the decorating)

He is painting the soffits with masonry paint because that’s what the old boy who owns the house painted it before used. He requested the same again as it’s lasted well. It was last painted 10 years ago!!! (admittedly Paul is holding the brush a bit chancerish in this picture, but he doesn’t always do that 🤣)

Yes, he is painting straight out of the tub, a 7.5L is handy for cutting in masonry as you go through loads, not to mention it’s white, not like it’s going to picture frame.

Yes, he is stood backwards on the ladder, he is aware of the danger but feels comfortable in doing so. The ladder is footed, while making sure the back of the fascia is painted so the end result looks good. If he fell, he would know it’s his fault and not blame someone else.

Although the sheet has come away in the picture, that is 10ft away from underneath him

I took this photo from a much bigger ladder going up a gable, doing the same thing as him (just not standing backwards)

He is not a chancer on £40 a day, like I said he is my business partner, on £130 a day plus what we earn off the 3 others that work for us.

The window sills are being painted black so it doesn’t matter about the white on them.

This is a long post so thanks for reading. Just shows you can’t judge a book by its cover. 🖕 to the haters!!
