Dulux Decorator Centre has brought a touch of the wild side to Barn Owl children’s residential home in Northampton, through a donation of paint used to upcycle disused tyres into animal and adventure themed sensory play arrangements.

Barn Owl residential children’s home is operated by WiNurture Childcare in Northampton, providing bespoke therapeutic residential care for young people aged between 6 and 18 with learning disabilities and social and emotional needs. Thanks to a donation from Dulux Decorator Centre, the group has been able to create a sensory garden to support, stimulate and entertain residents.

Dulux Decorator Centre in Northampton donated Dulux Trade Weathershield Smooth Masonry and Armstead Smooth Masonry in Cobalt Embrace, Molten Yellow, Warm Pewter, Black, White, Frosted Grape, Red and Blue View to upcycle tyres and create fun characters and creatures that adorn the now-complete garden. Weathershield Smooth Masonry was chosen for its ability to maintain the vibrant colours for years to come, with high opacity and up to 15 years of weather protection, as certified by the British Board of Agrément. Armstead Smooth Masonry also provides this level of defence, ensuring the tyres remain in the best possible condition while being outdoors and played with frequently.

Veronica Corby, Team Leader at Barn Owl, is thrilled with the donation and finished product. She said: “Ensuring that our residents feel at home, comfortable and supported is at the core of what we do at Barn Owl, and our new sensory garden helps us provide entertainment in a way that is safe and engaging. The tyres sit amongst a summerhouse, a private sitting area, and a fountain filled with sensory sand, bark, pebbles and grass to stimulate the senses.

“We’re so grateful for Dulux Decorator Centre’s donation and in-store expertise. The staff helped us choose paints that will make sure the garden can be enjoyed safely for many years to come, whilst providing paints in colours that feel welcoming and fun.”

The store manager at Dulux Decorator Centre Northampton, says: “We’re delighted to have been able to help in the development and decoration of the sensory garden at the Barn Owl home. Staff across the WiNuture group do such amazing work providing for young people, and the innovative use of these tyres – and the other elements of the garden – go to show that their creativity knows no bounds when it comes to their care.”

Dulux Decorator Centre has long supported the specification of paint across the education sector and its team of nationwide sector managers are on hand to offer advice. In addition, the Dulux Commercial Colour Service team can provide guidance on the best colours to use for individual projects. Alternatively, the Dulux Trade Colour Schemer tool can help design palettes for every project.
