Dulux Celebrates One Million Litre of Paint Redistributed Through Community Repaint Initiative
Dulux is celebrating the Community RePaint network’s Wirral branch reaching the astonishing milestone of redistributing its 1 millionth litre of paint since opening 11 years ago. That’s enough paint to cover Big Ben over 2,000 times.
The Community RePaint network was originally launched through funding provided by Dulux in 1993 and has been solely sponsored by the brand for over two decades. Since its inception, the network has redistributed 5.4 million litres of paint to individuals and community projects with a growing network of 80 schemes nationwide. Alongside redistributing paint, the network also remanufactures it to produce their own ReColour paint.
According to the British Coatings Federation, an estimated 55 million litres of paint is wasted in the UK each year. Community RePaint was established to tackle these challenges and encourage greater re-use of leftover paint by recovering and redistributing paint waste to individuals and groups in the wider community at affordable prices, reducing paint going to landfill.
As a result of repurposing 370,000 litres last year alone, the equivalent of 14.5 million kilos of CO2 has been saved – equal to taking over 70,000 flights from Heathrow to Madrid. This year so far has seen over 200,600 litres of paint reused, helping 1,153 organisations and 20,000 individuals add colour to their lives.
ReColour, Community RePaint’s remanufactured paint, has been used by over 500 community organisations since 2015 and offers an affordable option for high-quality paint for charities, community organisations, religious groups and those in social need to bring colour to their spaces. Using patented technology, leftover paint is filtered, treated, and blended to create a range of high-quality interior emulsion, exterior masonry, gloss, garden, and chalk furniture paint in large quantities of affordable paint that minimises the impact of paint waste on the environment.
Community RePaint is leading the way in providing a circular solution to leftover paint through the success of remanufacturing ReColour paint at their schemes in Wirral and Cambridgeshire. They are increasing the amount of paint saved from waste while meeting local communities’ demand for high-quality, affordable paint in larger quantities and subsequently increasing the amount of paint saved from going to waste.
Peter Howard, Sustainability and CSR Lead at AkzoNobel, the parent company of Dulux paints, commented: “We are tremendously proud to have been working with the Community RePaint network since its inception to divert more and more leftover paint from the waste stream and put it to its best use: colouring lives. Over the past 30 years, we have worked closely together to grow the network to over 80 different schemes, and it is inspiring to see the amazing milestones each scheme has achieved in this time.
“The Wirral’s incredible milestone in redistributing 1 million litres of paint is just one example of the tremendous achievements of the network, with many more schemes sure to soon follow. Seeing all the great work the schemes have done in supporting their local communities highlight just how important the network is. We remain committed to supporting this impactful initiative, whilst working more widely across our supply chain to improve the sustainability and circularity of the decorative paint industry.
Dulux’s sponsorship of Community RePaint forms part of AkzoNobel’s wider purpose to “Paint the Future”. Dulux and AkzoNobel continue to make promising progress towards achieving our ambitious aims. These include: reducing carbon emissions in own operations and value chain by 50% in 2030; using 100% circular materials in 2030; empowering over 100,000 people by 2030; and supporting over 2,000 community projects by 2030.”
Lilian Graves, Community RePaint Network Officer, commented: “We know that over 50 million litres of paint go to waste each year in the UK. It’s a shocking statistic, and at Community RePaint, we’re determined to provide a solution. It’s essential to reduce the amount of paint being incinerated or sent to landfill in order to protect the planet. This also benefits those who reuse leftover paint in their homes and communities who can access paint affordably and sustainably.
“Community RePaint Wirral, hosted by Recipro-UK, have shown great commitment to reuse in their redistribution of over 1 million litres of paint of over one million litres of paint. It is such a fantastic achievement and demonstrates how reuse initiatives can have a significant impact on our communities and planet.”
