Crown Trade Clean Extreme Review

Updated Jan 4, 2025 | Posted Jul 2, 2023 | Paints | 4 comments

I’m sure that most professional decorators will have heard of Crown Trade Clean Extreme, and I would guess that many have tried (or maybe even use on a regular basis) the stain resistant scrubbable matt product. But Clean Extreme is actually a range of six quality problem-solution products designed to keep walls and ceilings looking better, for longer.

All the products mentioned in this Crown Trade Clean Extreme review are available from any Crown Decorating Centre. However, unless you qualify for a trade discount, it is almost certainly cheaper to buy them online. To that end, I’ll link to an online retailer after each section. Click here to see full list of prices.

The way I like to think of the range to help me understand what fits where (the “range structure” if you like) is as follows:

  • Clean Extreme Stain Resistant (“regular”)
  • Scrubbable Matt
  • Acrylic Eggshell
  • Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial
  • Scrubbable Matt
  • Acrylic Eggshell
  • Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting
  • Scrubbable Matt
  • Acrylic Eggshell

In this review/blog I aim to tell you a little about each product and share my experiences of using them.

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt Review

Probably the best-known product in the range, and for many people their first encounter with Clean Extreme. The Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable matt was at one time voted the best scrubbable product on the market by professional decorators.  I’ll be up-front about it – I love this product, have done for years.

Like all the products in Crown’s Clen Extreme Range, it’s been ISO independently tested to Class 1 scrub rating, and is twice as stain resistant as regular vinyl matts. So, most stains will just wipe off, but if you do need to scrub it (not recommended until the paint has fully cured!) it will stand up to the test without (in my experience) developing shiny patches on your walls, unlike certain other scrubbable products I could name.

For me, Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt is the ideal product for painting walls in high traffic areas like hall, stairs and landing (see photo).

It has a great consistency to work with, goes a long way (further than it says on the tin, especially on the second coat) and is cheaper than a lot of other scrubbable matts out there. Like most scrubbable products, it does have a slight sheen to it, but only slight, it is definitely still a matt finish. It’s hard to find anything negative to say about this paint at all – love it!

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt is very easy to use, and you don’t experience any defects such as roller marks and picture framing like you do with some other durable matt emulsion products. You’re left with a rich finish with great depth. I can highly recommend this paint. Click here to see online prices.

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Acrylic Eggshell Review

Again, I’m a huge fan of this product. Like the scrubbable matt, most stains just wipe off, but if you do need to scrub it, go for it; although they don’t make a big feature of it on the front of the tin, the Clean Extreme Eggshell has also been independently tested to class 1 scrubbability (I don’t think that scrubbability is in the dictionary, but you know what I mean!).

This is a great product for kitchens and bathrooms (as long as you don’t mind that “mid-sheen” finish). I’ve pretty much stopped using soft sheen altogether, as this (in my opinion) is far superior. Personally (and this really is just personal taste) I’m not a huge fan of it on ceilings; for me the sheen level is a little bit too much, but it doesn’t seem to be so noticeable on walls.  But don’t let that put you off – this is a cracking product for kitchens and bathrooms.

Unlike a lot of other trade eggshell emulsions, Crown Trade Clean Extreme Eggshell doesn’t look cheap and nasty. Like every other product on this review, it is nice and easy to use, with great opacity and durability. I love this paint. Click here to see online prices.

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt Review

OK, this one is a little bit outside of my experience, as almost all of my work as a Decorator is domestic, so I’ve never been asked to spec an anti-bacterial paint.  These products are ideal in hospitals, doctor’s surgeries, possibly dentists or vet centres, etc.

So, this product has all the great benefits of Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt, PLUS it gives defence against bacteria such as E-Coli and MRSA, thanks to Crown’s SteriTouch technology. This has something to do with Silver Ions, and I was seriously the worst kid in the class at chemistry at school, so please don’t ask me to explain how it works. But if you’re working in a hospital and need a scrubbable matt finish, this is the paint for you!

Again, I’ve never used this personally, but I imagine in certain environments this must be the perfect paint. It’s wipeable, scrubbable, stain-resistant, anti-bacterial… all they need to add is bullet-proof! Click here for online prices.

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Mould-Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt Review

Another product that I haven’t personally used, but it’s easy to see the benefits; a scrubbable matt finish with an added fungicidal barrier to defend against mould growth. If the landlords of this country weren’t so tight, this would be a top seller! Click here to see online prices.

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Mould-Inhibiting Acrylic Eggshell Review

This one I have used, and again, I love it. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Mould-Inhibiting Acrylic Eggshell is absolutely my favourite for any bathroom with even a hint of mould!  Obviously, if there is a mould problem, it needs to be dealt with properly; a coat of paint alone won’t solve the problem. Click here for more guidance.

But once the mould has been treated and any stains blocked, this is the perfect product to help stop it coming back.  It goes on nicely and has all the benefits shared by the rest of the Clean Extreme range – it’s stain resistant and scrubbable.

I have a teenage son who spends forever in the shower. Literally, he will stay in there until the hot water has run out. Since I repainted the bathroom with this, we have no mould, but also no condensation run marks down the walls. Maybe I just got lucky with my choice of colour so they don’t show, or maybe this is just great paint for a bathroom!

Crown Clean Extreme is touch dry after 1–2 hours and can be recoated after 3-4 hours. This can vary depending on conditions.

Can Crown Clean Extreme be used on wood?

Crown Clean Extreme Eggshell can be used on wood, providing you apply an appropriate adhesion primer first. Crown Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt can also be used on woodwork, but it scuffs easier than specialist wood paint.

How to clean Crown Clean Extreme?

Just use a damp cloth and a bucket of soapy water. Don’t use any harsh cleaners like kitchen degreaser or it will attack the paint.

Final Thoughts

Crown Trade Clean Extreme is a great range of products at a price that should really make it everyone’s first choice for environments that need a stain-resistant, scrubbable paint, whether it’s high traffic hallways, hospitals or bathrooms occupied by teenagers!

Not only are they affordable and scrubbable, I find them a pleasure to use, the consistency is great, and Crown include really helpful information on the tins such as what to use as a mist-coat on fresh plaster, what tips and pressure to use if you’re spraying… I really, really have to struggle to find something I dislike about this range of products. It is probably the best durable emulsion range on the UK market.

If I had to find one thing I didn’t like, the opacity in white isn’t the best, but even there Crown have reformulated to improve this recently. But I don’t want to end on a negative when there’s so much that I love about this paint. IT’S GREAT GEAR!

The opacity in the Clean Extreme white has definitely improved since they made the changes.

I’ve had an account with Johnstones since I went alone last April. But the prices keep going up and down at my branch which is very frustrating.
Crown have been in touch to try get me to go over to them… I am considering this. I’ve use the clean extreme matt a couple of times and thought it was great. Probably better than a certain alternative I’m using at the moment. Might have to move over. Although I do like the water based system I use for woodwork at Johnos…

I have a question of ability to mix the clean extreme. I notice the markets seem to show only white but I am trying for something like a very pale gray or blue. Is this paint able to take mixes?

Hi, hope you can help. I have recently had an extension with a roof lantern ( now thinking big mistake ) the flies seem to love it up there and leave spots on the ceiling paint. My question is what is the best scrubbable stain resistant paint in your opinion to buy. Thanks
