Crown Paints has supported the restoration of Stow Windmill, a much-loved local landmark on the North Norfolk coast that has been transformed into a unique holiday let.
The historic windmill, which is located in Paston, near Mundesley-on-Sea, has been a landmark of the North Norfolk coastline since 1825. Milling until 1930, it became a tourist attraction in the 1970s before being transformed into luxury holiday accommodation between 2016 and 2019.
The interior of the Mill was refurbished to a very high standard in 2019, alongside restoration of the sails and cap to allow it to work again.
The most recent project saw a full re-decoration of the exterior of the Mill, with Crown’s team of product and colour experts offering support in revitalising the windmill whilst crucially upholding its heritage.
Sandtex X-treme X-posure was chosen as a key product in the renovation of the windmill’s brick work tower exterior, with its 20 years protection guarantee ideal to safeguard the historic structure over the coming decades.
It was also specified due to its unmatched protection against weather exposure. Due to the proximity of the windmill to the sea, selecting a product that could withstand the harsh coastal weather conditions was essential, and X-treme X-posure’s ultimate dirt resistance and excellent adhesion made it the perfect choice.
Another of Crown’s range of premium exterior products, Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection, was chosen for its stand-out credentials. This highly durable product provides ultimate protection for exteriors, ensuring the resulting coating remains flexible and resists cracking, peeling and flaking, which is essential for surfaces exposed to the elements.
Superdec was ideal for applying on the weathered static and moving wooden and fibreglass surfaces of the windmill, resulting in a strong and secure coating which provides security against the elements.
In terms of colour selection, the team was keen to maintain the traditional appearance of the windmill, using black on the brickwork tower of the structure and white on the cap and sails.
The opacity offered by both Sadolin Superdec and Sandtex X-treme X-posure helped to ensure a premium finish for the colours selected, restoring the nearly 200-year-old exterior back to its very best.
Empty paint cans were picked up and returned to the local Crown Decorating Centre to be recycled as part of Crown Trade’s Can Back scheme. The scheme, which operates from 120 stores, is open to all Crown Decorating Centres account holders and encourages decorators to return empty paint cans free of charge so they can be recycled.
Stuart Grant, Contractor and Specification Manager at Crown Paints, commented: “It’s been a pleasure to supply our exterior products to Stow Windmill, and to aid the restoration of such an historic landmark.
“From the beginning of the project, it was clear to see how important and loved the structure is by the local community, and it’s been so rewarding to see our products restore this landmark back to its original beauty for visitors to enjoy in years to come.”
Robin & Anita, owners of Stow Mill, commented: “Having the support of Crown’s expertise when undertaking the re-decoration of the windmill was invaluable and the whole team has been brilliant from start to finish.
“It was vital to us from the start of this project that the heritage of the site was maintained and that we used products that would be robust and perform well, preserving and protecting our much-loved Stow Windmill. Thanks to expert team at Crown and the quality of the products used, we’ve been able to do exactly that.
“We are very pleased with the result, as are our guests and the many passers-by who often stop and take photographs of one of the best preserved and “working” windmills in the country.”
