Am I the Devil?

By Andrew Mackey

I wallpapered a living room for a client today. It was a lovely Italian, medium weight, paste the wall random match, mid grey linen textured wallpaper.

It said nothing on the label about being reverse hang.

Started on the biggest wall which gets flooded with light from the two front windows. For whatever reason I hung the first three drops reverse hang, then the next five drops on that wall were all hung the normal way. You could clearly see the difference and I realised my mistake but opted to leave them up and hope they settled down and the client, whom I’ve done loads of work for before didn’t notice my mistake. I knew she would because she’s a fussy one, she waited a month for me because she won’t use anyone else, and then I go and f**k it up!

I hung the rest of the room reverse pattern and it looked amazing.

She enters the room and exclaims, what a fabulous job it is! She loves the colour and l could see her inspecting the cuts and lines, couldn’t find any faults!

I’m sweating, think I got away with my error, then I noticed her gazing at the offending wall. She asks me if I notice the odd shading on the five strips?

What would you do?

I played dumb and told her it must have been a faulty roll, even though I was only getting three drops out of a roll and five were affected.

She swallowed it and luckily enough there is a full roll left and some partial rolls to make up the rest.

I’m getting paid to come back and strip the five lengths and rehang….
